Plants, Animals and Birds

The incredible diversity of plants, birds, and animal species in our region is the result of the dual climate zones of the Namib and the Erongo mountains. These climates meet at the foot of Hohenstein. Since commercial farming with livestock has been discontinued, the natural vegetation has recovered beautifully back to its original state.

The variety of bird life is incredible. In addition to all of the native varieties of eagles there are many other bird species whose existence is not limited to the extreme north or the cost. If you enjoy bird watching, we highly recommend that you bring along binoculars and a book of Namibian birds. (refer to Bird watching on Hohenstein and www.birdscontour.com/html/newsletter_may_2007.html

In addition to numerous small mammals, the following animals also live at Hohenstein:
Leopard (the Erongo has the highest density of leopards in Namibia), Cheetah, Caracal, African wild cats, Small spotted cat, Striped polecat, Small spotted genet, Honey badger, Black backed jackal, Cape fox, Bat eared fox, Brown hyena, Aardwolf, different Mongoose (under it the rare black one), Baboons, Porcupine, Pangolin, Ant bear, Bush hare, Spring hare, Kudu, Oryx, Mountain Zebra, Wart hog, Damara Dik Dik, Steinbok, Duiker, Klippspringer

Some antelope varieties have disappeared due to commercial farming in the past. We are making an effort to resettle these antelopes. Up to this point, we have successfully reintroduced Red harte beest, Common wildebeest and Damara springboks. They apparently feel at home and are on the increase.
