Bushmen – Damara paintings

The oldest paintings in Namibia are about
25.000 years old. They belong to the oldest works of art in the world along with some discoveries from the ice age found on the Swabian Alb.
Following the original inhabitants other tribal cultures cultures, such as the Bushman and the Damara have left their own paintings on the same rocks.

Because of the enormous size of the Hohenstein expanse the natives have long been using paths leading along the foot of the mountain range rather than crossing over it. The region is therefore rich in archeological sites of various origins. The best preserved drawings are not always the most interesting. The oldest designs are sometimes so faded that they are now barely recognizable among the others. It is difficult to determine the exact age of the designs, but it is estimated that they are between 2000 and 6000 years old with the fragments of the faded drawings being considerably older than that.

Since subsequent native artists painted on the same rocks, you are able to compare differences in style and color. Among their many designs are the most diverse mammals, birds, spirits, medicine men, and humans of various tribes depicted in everyday activities such as hunting, dancing, child birth etc.

Our most interesting drawings are situated in such an ideal location that you can see them by simply stepping out of the Landrover next to them during a Sundowner drive.

We don’t want to protect the pictures by iron fences, but we ask our guests not to touch or moisten with water etc. the works of art.
